Unit 9 BCC: Childhood Grief: Recommendations for Caregivers (2025)
Speaking about death does not come naturally to most adults especially when it comes to informing children or helping them cope. Words describing death are often softened, by saying "passed on", "no longer with us" or "sleeping". Research explains that shielding children from reality may do the opposite of what we want. Talking to children in this way can cause confusion.
This lesson includes research-based recommendations for talking to children, and helping them cope with the death of a loved one.
